The United States’ premier convertible competition, “SAMA Topless in Miami Presented by Haartz,” just named the 2015 Porsche Boxster GTS “Convertible of the Year.”
The annual event – organized by the Southern Automotive Media Association (SAMA) and sponsored by Haartz Corporation, the world’s leading supplier of convertible topping material – bestows the top honor on one car each year. However, awards are also presented across a number of classes.
Drop-top vehicles that enter the competition are judged on a long list of criteria — including fit, finish, function, design, acoustics and trunk space.
Other 2015 winners included the Maserati GranTurismo Convertible in the Luxury Class, the Mercedes-Benz E400 Cabriolet in the Full-Size Class, the Mazda MX-5 in the Small Convertible Class, and the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe in the Super Luxury Class.
The Boxster, which starts at around $70,000, received more first-place votes than any of the other class winners to win top honor. It also beat out the Chevy Corvette Stingray, Ford Mustang and Nissan 370Z in the Performance Convertible Class.
“This was an exceptionally fine field this year,” said Paul Borden, SAMA vice president and chairman of the event. “It’s a difficult task to distinguish between such great vehicles with each a winner in its own right. But our members look forward to it each year.”
In total, 17 vehicles from 14 automakers entered the competition, held at the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne Resort in Miami, Florida.
“As a longtime customer, we congratulate Porsche on earning top honors this year. The Boxster features our high-performance acoustic topping material, which enhances the sporty feel of the vehicle,” said Matt Williams, director of business development for the Haartz Corporation. “There was a great selection of vehicles this year showcasing some of the best technology is soft-top convertibles.”
