Someone just paid $46,000 for two swatches of blood-stained leather from the limousine that President John F. Kennedy was riding in when he was assassinated.
Kennedy’s presidential motorcade was driving through Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas, when he was shot by former U.S. Marine Lee Harvey Oswald on November 22, 1963. He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Sixty years later, RR Auction sold two swatches of leather from the 1961 Lincoln Continental X-100 he was killed in.
The items auctioned include two large light and dark blue leather swatches and a letter of provenance on White House letterhead from F. Vaughn Ferguson, a technical service representative at the White House whose primary responsibility was the care of the presidential limousine.
The letter states: “Four days after the assassination the White House upholsterer and I removed this leather at the White House. The light blue leather is from the center of the rear seat. The dark blue leather is from the border of the rear seat. The spots on the leather are the dried blood of our beloved President, John F. Kennedy.”
The auction ended on November 8, 2023. It’s not clear who bought the morbid memorabilia — or why. But people are obsessed with that fateful day.
