Wyotech and NC Carpet Binding & Equipment are partnering in a way that will allow NC to provide machinery, supplies, support and an educational element to auto upholstery students.
The collaboration will start next week and impact at least 20 WyoTech students currently in session and future WyoTech students. “The agreement literally came together last Thursday. We’re excited to be a part of the WyoTech curriculum and lend our support to their program,” said Mal Maher, CEO of NC Carpet Binding & Equipment.
The class will cover auto upholstery and small business skills that every aspiring trimmer and shop owner will need to know to be successful in their careers. NC will also donate a NC1508NH Machine Starter Package to the classroom for students to learn on. They’ll even provide students with literature packets that include a full vendor list, recommendations for quality interior products and more. And if any students want to buy an NC machine, they’ll enjoy steep discounts, a 5-year extended warranty and same-day tech support when needed.
“Providing our students with additional learning experiences during their semester with us is paramount. Supporting them with a network to lean on after completing their semester at WyoTech is a value-added component that NC Carpet Binding helps provide,” said Said Cindy Barlow, director of industry relations at WyoTech.
In addition to NC Carpet Binding’s involvement, Phil Cato of Cato’s Custom Upholstery will be providing instruction and teaching a class. This week Cato is being inducted into the WyoTech Hall of Fame. If that weren’t enough, Mal and Phil will also sponsor one Wyotech student per year to take one of Phil’s highly acclaimed Cato 101 auto upholstery classes at his shop in Salt Lake City, Utah.
WyoTech student Kaden Walters has already been sponsored to attend Cato’s door panel building class June 7-9, 2024.
“I’m so grateful to Phil Cato and NC Carpet Binding for sponsoring me to attend the Cato 101 class,” Walters said. “My instructors at WyoTech, HL and Mac, have taught me so much but I have no upholstery experience. Learning hands-on with real pros will help me grow and launch my upholstery business after my WyoTech semester is complete.”
Maher says he and Cato are excited to teach the class and present the students with these opportunities because they believe in WyoTech’s mission to train the next generation of craftspeople.
“The continued education and growth of the upholstery community will help upholsterers get what their worth. Providing students with some foundational skills and resources will help them now and giving support along the way is what our family is all about,” Maher said.
