It’s official: cars are now smarter than the people who drive them.
Volkswagen has begun equipping its vehicles with artificial intelligence, specifically a ChatGPT-integrated Plus Speech voice assistant. The feature is rolling out for the 2025 Jetta and Jetta GLI, as well as 2024 ID.4 models equipped with an 82kWh battery.
With the ChatGPT integration, Volkswagen’s voice assistant function will be able to processes a virtually unlimited amount of queries for drivers and passengers.
“With the introduction of ChatGPT, the possibilities have expanded significantly: for example, AI can provide information on tourist attractions, report on past football tournaments or help solve maths problems. All of this works intuitively: the driver simply talks to the assistant in natural language, and there is no need for them to take their eyes off the road,” Volkswagen said in a news release.
The feature will be free for a limited time on certain models, but to maintain the service car owners will have to pay a subscription fee. Time will tell whether car buyers will bite. But with the ChatGPT app already available for phones, it’s a hard sell.
Still, pretty cool.
