Trimmer James Joseph Winters of Binghamton, New York, has died at age 74.
James was born in 1950. At 18 years old, he joined the US Army, where he served for three years. After completing his service in 1971, he pursued a career in auto upholstery.
He was a respected trimmer in upstate New York, working first at J + R Upholstery and then Roger Neil before opening his own business, Winters Auto Upholstery. “He produced every job, from design and sewing to final installation, with a hand-crafted, artisan quality that is hard to find these days,” his obituary says. “His excellent reputation made just about anyone with a classic car in the surrounding area seek out Jim to do their cars interior.”
In his down time, James enjoyed restoring classic cars and street rods. He proudly owned three 65’ Mustang Fastbacks throughout his life, which he loved racing around to scare his wife. He was also very passionate about his Irish-American heritage, bluegrass music, dancing and hunting.
“Jim had an unforgettable quick wit and sense of humor; these qualities, along with his charming smile, got him far in life,” his obituary says.
“Jim’s life philosophy was straightforward: ‘Don’t worry, be happy,’ and he wisely reminded us to ‘Keep it simple.'”
Sadly, James died on September 14, 2024. He is survived by his dedicated wife, Roberta “Bertie” Allen; daughter, Kara Winters; son, Tim Rose; sisters, Nancy Witter and Marie Crampton; and brother, Ron Winters.
