Joseph Pavich, an interior design engineer for Tesla Motors and former owner of JPM Coachworks, wrote the article for The Hog Ring earlier this year.
The Shop Magazine felt it was important that they re-published the article in their latest issue, which will be distributed for free throughout the 2019 SEMA Show.
We’re excited to have this article made available to every attendee of the show. Upholstering car seats equipped with airbags is not just another repair job, it’s a responsibility. Trimmers who don’t understand how airbag seams work or have the tools to properly sew them put their customers’ lives in danger.
Fortunately, we have people like Joseph in our industry who are willing to share their knowledge and expertise with us. It would be a shame for any trimmer to find this article too late.

Being an ol timer and also owning my business located in the sticks, I have been fortunate enough to for the most part pass on these airbag jobs. I still get plenty of the classic oldies to keep us floating, I Also take on furniture for the “slow” winter months. I have a customer who bought in a 2016 set of buckets to have me redo and reupholster for his 57 chevy. He wants me to match his original rear seats with the design of the buckets and eliminate the airbags. Truthfully it is the first time I seen those bags or had any experience with em. I heard they are expensive, Anybody need a set I have them in “stock” make me an offer if anyone has a need for them. Good luck and keep busy . God Bless all of yas.
