Kia has recalled more than 2,400 EV9 models, with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) saying its headliner may not adequately protect passengers in accidents.
The all-electric midsize SUV’s headliner does not meet federal safety requirements, NHTSA said. In effect, its headliner may not absorb the necessary impact force required to protect occupants’ heads if the EV9 is involved in a crash.
Impacted models were built at Kia’s Gwangmyeong Autoland plant in Korea between September 25, 2023 and March 21, 2024.
Kia says it’s not aware of any injuries, crashes or fatalities caused by the EV9’s faulty headliner. However, it is taking precautionary measures.
To resolve the matter, dealers will remove the impact-absorbing plates that are mounted on the headliner and replace them with upgraded components. Future models will be fitted with upgraded impact-absorbing plates from the factory.
If a 2024 Kia EV9 rolls into your shop, be sure to let your customer know.
