For the fifth year in a row, JD Power’s U.S. Seat Quality and Satisfaction Study has found that people hate their headrests.
“Vehicle seat manufacturers have worked diligently to improve seat quality and functionality, however, the headrest is one of the top problems for a fifth consecutive year, highlighting the need for adjustments is long overdue,” the industry watchdog said in its 2024 report.
J.D. Power surveyed 99,144 purchasers and lessees of new model vehicles. The survey was conducted after 90 days of ownership to find out how drivers were finding the seats in their new vehicles.
Owners who are happy with their headrests only report one seat problem per 100 vehicles, but owners who do have a problem with their headrests report 6.7 problems per 100 vehicles.
The conclusion? People generally like their car seats but dislike the headrests. Among the top issues they have with them are positioning and adjustability.
“Headrest adjustability needs to be prioritized by seat manufacturers as it does have an effect on overall seat experience,” said Ashley Edgar, senior director of automotive benchmarking at J.D. Power. “As much as manufacturers can address many of the other aspects of seat quality, overall comfort is lost without a proper headrest.”
What do you think? Do headrests suck that bad?
