Zippers — small but mighty — are a crucial part of auto upholstery, marine covers and furniture projects. But if you’ve ever found yourself second-guessing which size zipper to use, you’re not alone. Fortunately, sizing zippers is easier than you think!
Albright’s Supply recently published a zipper guide on their Upholstery Insight Blog, outlining the types of zippers available, the different kinds of projects they’re used for, and more.
Here’s what they shared about sizing zippers:
Measuring a Zipper: It’s All About the Teeth
When it comes to zipper sizing, the teeth tell the tale. To find the size, simply close the zipper so the teeth are locked together, then measure just the teeth (not the tape) in millimeters. The width in millimeters corresponds to the zipper size. So, a zipper with 10mm-wide teeth is a #10 zipper — easy, right?
Of course, not all zippers are created equal. Different sizes serve different purposes, and knowing which one to choose will save you headaches down the road.
Sizes 4, 4.5, and 5 are the go-to choice for furniture upholstery, including couch cushions and pillow covers. Small but sturdy!
Size 10 is the heavy-duty hero, found in boat covers, convertible and Jeep tops, and marine enclosures. When durability is key, this is the size you need.
Choosing the Right Zipper for the Job
Beyond size, consider the environment your zipper will face. Marine applications? Look for corrosion-resistant zippers. Auto upholstery? Durability and flexibility matter.
By understanding zipper sizes and their ideal uses, you’ll confidently choose the right one every time. No more guesswork — just perfect results!
