Woodoo, a French company that specializes in material science, has developed a transparent wood that automakers are reportedly interested in using in future vehicles.
The molecularly-modified transparent wood is made by extracting air and lignin from low-grade wood like beech, pine and poplar, and then reinforcing it with a bio-based polymer that boosts performance. The modified wood is weatherproof, lighter in weight, more resistant to fire, three to five times stronger and transparent, according to Woodworking Network.
Although the technology is new, Wood00 says it’s already working with automotive and aviation design companies to integrate it into vehicle and aircraft displays as “tactile dashboards.”
Concept photos released by Woodoo show the material used in place of touch screens, which is a really interesting use case.
We’ve seen plenty of touch-sensitive smart surfaces in the past, but never wood.
Who knew the future was smart wood? 🤷♂️
