German automotive textile manufacturer Straehle + Hess is expanding its operation in Auburn, Alabama, a move that could lead to additional jobs and more production capacity as demand from automakers continues to grow.
Construction is now underway at the company’s Auburn facility. According to company officials, the expansion will help improve logistics operations and support new business expected to launch later this year.
Straehle + Hess manufactures technical textiles used in automotive interiors for a range of major vehicle brands, including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, Tesla and Chrysler.
Auburn Mayor Ron Anders said the expansion reflects continued economic growth in the area. “Construction is a good indicator of positive economic activity, and the expansion of the Straehle + Hess facility will allow for further investments and job growth in our community over time,” he told Open Line.
During a recent tour of the facility, Anders said he was impressed by the manufacturing process behind the company’s automotive interior products and proud that the components are being produced locally in Auburn.
Straehle + Hess has operated in Auburn for about 20 years. According to CEO Mathias Gerhold, the company originally started in a 10,000 square foot facility inside Auburn’s business incubator complex. Once the expansion is complete, Straehle + Hess will occupy roughly 70,000 square feet in Auburn Technology Park South.
Gerhold said the company appreciates its relationship with the city and plans to remain part of the Auburn community for years to come.
Peter Mazzucco, chairman of the Management Board of Straehle + Hess Group, added that the U.S. market remains important to the company, especially as automotive production continues growing across the southeastern United States. He also credited the City of Auburn, its Industrial Development Board and the presence of Auburn University as key advantages for continued expansion.
